Nasal Resistance and Posture: Why Lying Down Blocks Your Nose
Most people feel their nose block when they lie down. The literature shows that this is measurable, not imagined.
If a stuffy nose has an allergy behind it, I compared the reviews and trials in allergies and sleep.
If the nose is the bottleneck, read how mouth taping studies handled people with nasal obstruction.
Here’s what the studies say about posture, nasal resistance and sleep.
Lying Down Raises Resistance
A meta-analysis of 9 studies and 291 people found that recumbency raises nasal resistance, by about 0.18 Pa s/cm3 overall, 0.20 in snorers and apnea patients and 0.10 in healthy people (Calvo-HenrĂquez 2021).
Among people with night-time congestion but a clear nose by day, smokers and people with rhinitis saw the largest rise when supine (Stroud 1999).
Side-Lying Isn’t Always Better
In 39 people with sleep apnea, awake nasal resistance rose from seated (median 1.8) to supine (2.7) to side-lying (3.4 cm H2O/L/s) (Tong 2020).
The dependent nostril tends to fill, which is why one side often clogs.

Why It Matters For Sleep-Disordered Breathing
In 88 people with sleep apnea, supine nasal resistance correlated with oxygen desaturation index and time below 90% saturation, especially in moderate to severe apnea (Lan 2021).
A 2026 analysis linked nasal obstruction to an AHI about 13.78 events per hour higher (Alshehri 2026). Correlation isn’t causation, but it points at the nose as a modifiable factor.
Treatment Notes
Saline irrigation plus a steroid spray beat the spray alone on nasal blockage in a 120-person allergic rhinitis trial (Chahar 2025).
Topical decongestants are effective, and a review found no rebound with up to 7 days of oxymetazoline or 10 days of xylometazoline (Hagen 2025). Follow the label, which is shorter.
