Zyppah Review (Updated) | A Great Snoring Mouthpiece

“Do it for someone you love.”

It’s the tagline printed on each box of the Zyppah, an anti-snoring mouthpiece that’s been taking the world by storm. It’s also the reason that we decided to buy it.

As snorers, we know that our problem is more than just a personal one. It’s also something that actively and consistently affects the quality of life of our spouses.

Though you could be lucky enough to be married to someone who doesn’t complain, you will still feel guilty whenever you see them yawning at the breakfast table.

You don’t even have to ask why. You know what kept them awake.

So, yes. When we first laid eyes on Zyapph’s tagline, it was irresistible to us. Thankfully, it turned out to be a great anti-snoring product that provides real results!

Our Honest Review of the Zyppah Snoring Mouthpiece

We can offer a Zyapph review that’s full of praise with just a few minor qualms.

Are you ready to learn more about the Zyppah? Let’s do this.

How an Anti-Snoring Mouthpiece Works

Snoring can be caused by everything from alcohol consumption to crooked nasal passages, but most people suffer because of an obstruction to their airway.

When you sleep, your body enters a state of relaxation that makes your throat muscles relax and your tongue roll backwards. This results in a blocked airway where oxygen has to work twice as hard to pass through your nose and mouth.

There are several different ways that anti-snoring devices tackle this problem. Some of them are mandibular advancement device (MADs) that press your jaw forward as you asleep, holding open your airway when you can’t do it yourself.

Others are tongue retaining devices (TRDs) that keep your tongue still, preventing it from collapsing backwards and obstructing the back of your throat.

Zyppah Snoring Mouthpiece

The Zyppah does both. Unlike MADs and TRDs that only offer a single solution for snoring, it utilizes a hybrid design that manipulates the jaw and the tongue. This puts it a step above just about every other anti-snoring device on the market.

But you don’t have to take my words on faith. Let me go into detail and prove how the Zyppah can help you.

Design

The Zyppah is a mouthpiece that you wear overnight. It has a rigid outer layer with a softer inner layer that presses against your teeth. There’s also an elastic band that rests over your tongue and holds it in place while you sleep.

It’s “one size fits all” in the sense that everyone is sent the same product with the same measurements. You can’t order anything with different specs.

However, the Zyppah can be customized to fit the exact dimensions of your mouth. It’s made of a flexible thermoplastic material that allows it to be heated, softened and re-shaped.

This is known as the “boil and bite” method of fitting, and we’ll describe it more thoroughly in a minute.

The Zyppah is FDA-cleared and BBB-accredited. We’re not sure if it’s totally hypoallergenic, but it’s free of latex, acrylics and BPA. It shouldn’t trigger any allergies or sensitivities.

As for style, it’s bright green, so it’s not exactly a subtle presentation. But you can rest assured that you’ll never lose the Zyppah among the knick-knacks on your nightstand.

Fitting the Zyppah Mouthpiece

Let’s talk about the “boil and bite” method.

This is a unique fitting process that can be completed in your own kitchen. It might take more than one attempt to get it right, but you have three chances before you damage the integrity of the product, and it’s not overly complicated. You just have to be careful about the steps and how you perform them.

Here are the basics:

1. Bring a cup of water to a boil. This can be done on the stove or in the microwave.

2. Submerge the Zyppah in the hot water. Make sure that it’s completely covered. It will try to float, so hold it down with a fork or a pair of tongs. Keep it underwater for 30 – 45 seconds.

3. Using your utensil, lift the Zyppah by its tongue strap. Let it cool down for 10 – 15 seconds.

4. Put the Zyppah in your mouth and bite down. Do this for about a minute. If you’ve performed all of the steps correctly, you should feel the material sinking slightly beneath your teeth.

5. Remove the Zyppah and run it under cold water for another 30 seconds. This will re-harden the material and leave a permanent impression of your teeth.

Again, this isn’t a very complicated routine. It just takes a stopwatch and a careful attention to detail. If you mess something up, you can re-boil and re-bite the mouthpiece, but be warned that you’ll weaken the thermoplastic with every attempt. Try to get it done as quickly as possible.

Ease of Use

Once you’ve gotten over the fitting hurdle, you’ll find that the Zyppah is quite easy to use. Just pop it in your mouth and leave it alone. Nothing else needs to be twisted, boiled, glued, screwed or otherwise adjusted.

It might feel strange to hold the Zyppah in your mouth, especially if you’ve never used an anti-snoring mouthpiece before. This is normal. Don’t let it phase you.

Personally, it took us the better part of a week before we grew so accustomed to the Zyppah that we stopped noticing it.

The manufacturers recommend wearing it for a few hours before bedtime if you want to adjust faster; if you can watch TV or read a book with the mouthpiece in place, it won’t feel so weird once you’re in bed.

You might experience some drooling after your first night with the Zyppah. Again, this is normal. Excess saliva production is a common side effect for first-time users, but it will go away as you get used to the sensation of wearing a mouthpiece.

You can sleep in any position that you want. It doesn’t matter if you’re more comfortable on your stomach, back or sides.

We’ve tried them all, and we’ve never noticed a difference in the efficiency of the Zyppah. It will keep your airway open no matter what kind of angle that you’re working at night.

Upkeep

The Zyppah will last 4-6 months if you take proper care of it. But what constitutes proper care?

For starters, it will need to be cleaned regularly. It’s an oral device that comes into contact with the bacteria of the mouth, so it will start to stink and stain without good hygienic practices.

The good news is that the Zyppah is easy to maintain. While the manufacturers recommend using their special anti-viral and anti-fungal cleaning foam, you can get the job done with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste.

You can also soak the Zyppah in water that’s been treated with dental cleaning tablets.

As for storage, keep the Zyppah in a cool, dry place when not in use. Your nightstand is fine. So is a medicine cabinet.

We’d recommend against a bathroom counter; they tend to get wet from the sink, and they get regularly exposed to things like hairdryer heat.

Never use harsh chemicals on the Zyppah. Don’t bleach it. Don’t clean it with ammonia. Treat it like the delicate dental tool that it is.

The Zyppah will wear down over time, and unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done to prevent this. The elastic will eventually bow under the constant pressure of your teeth and tongue.

However, the product will be simple enough to replace. The manufacturers even offer special deals for repeat customers; the standard is 20 percent off, but you can also get lucky with coupons every now and then.

Flaws

As much as we love the Zyppah, it isn’t a perfect product, and we want to be completely honest in this review. You should have all of the facts at your disposal before you bring out your credit card.

Here are some of the reasons that you might not want to buy the Zyppah:

  • It requires a certain amount of effort to use and maintain. From customizing the fit to keeping it clean, it’s a product that you need to be willing to invest energy in, so it might not be suitable for extremely busy individuals without a lot of spare time during their morning routine.
  • It isn’t meant for people with braces, dentures, loose teeth or bridge work. You can still use it in the sense that it won’t hurt anything, but the manufacturers can’t guarantee its performance.
  • It will require an adjustment period as you get used to the experience of wearing a mouthpiece. You might drool. You might experience a sore tongue or jaw when you wake up in the morning. These things will go away with time, but they’re something to consider.

Are you still on the fence about the Zyppah?
