Vaping Before Bed: What It Means for Sleep and Snoring

You vape in the evening and you snore at night. Does one feed the other?

I went through the research. We found nothing proving vaping causes snoring, but the sleep data are not friendly to nicotine.

The Sleep Data

Vapers were more likely to sleep too little across 14 studies, according to a 2025 meta-analysis (odds ratio 1.38, range 1.24 to 1.55).

It covered cross-sectional work only, so cause is unproven. Another study found worse sleep health even in non-daily users.

The Nicotine Effect

Researchers gave nonsmokers an 11 mg patch. Total sleep fell 33 minutes and falling asleep took 18.2 minutes, per a 1994 study.

A small 2019 experiment with 17 people also saw faster pulses and stiffer arteries soon after inhaling nicotine.

What We Cannot Say

We cannot say vapor is safer for your lungs. A BMJ review says the evidence is not there yet.

We also cannot say it causes snoring. Cigarette smokers snored for more of the night than nonsmokers (41% versus 31%) in one population study, which is only a hint.

What I’d Do

Why Timing Matters

The body does not clear nicotine on your schedule. A vape at ten can still be working on your nervous system at midnight.

That is why I focus on a cutoff rather than a quit date. A cutoff is easier to hold, and it lets you test the effect on your own sleep.

Pair it with a wind-down routine: dim lights, no screens, and the same bedtime each night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Studies link vaping with shorter and poorer sleep, and nicotine is a stimulant.

No study we found shows that. Cigarette smoking is linked to more snoring in one study.

Current evidence cannot say it is safer for the respiratory system.

A nicotine-free window before bed, side sleeping, and a check for sleep apnea.

Bottom Line

Do not wait for a perfect study. Pull the vape out of your pre-sleep routine and see how you wake up.
