Which Anti-Snoring Device Fits Your Snoring?
Here is what I tell every new snorer: do not start with the gadget. Start with the question.
Where does your snoring come from? Answer that and the right device gets obvious.
If It Only Happens on Your Back
Gravity is the culprit. Turning off your back lowered apnea scores in back-dominant sleepers, says a systematic review, although CPAP beat it overall.
Try side sleeping first. Our guide to sleep positions that reduce snoring shows how to stay there.
If Your Jaw Falls Back
A mouthpiece moves your lower jaw forward. Sleep medicine and dental sleep groups endorse mouthpieces for simple snoring in their AASM and AADSM guideline.

Read our mouthpiece guide and the full buyer’s guide before buying.
If You Breathe Through Your Mouth
A chin strap sounds logical. A randomized trial tried the strap alone. Neither apnea scores nor snoring moved.
So treat it as an add-on. Do not expect it to carry the load.
If Your Doctor Says It’s Apnea
CPAP leads the evidence. Fourteen trials went into a meta-analysis. CPAP removed around seven more events per hour than a jaw-advancing device.
Still, comfort and use matter. See the pros and cons of CPAP and CPAP drawbacks before you decide.
If You Are Not Sure
Get a sleep test. In a 1995 study of men aged 40 to 65, loud snoring did not reliably separate apnea from simple snoring.
Test first, buy second. That order saves money.
A Two-Week Trial Plan
Pick one tool and give it fourteen nights. Keep a note each morning on how you slept, whether anyone heard you, and how your jaw feels.
Do not change anything else during the trial. If you add a new pillow and a mouthpiece on the same night, you will not know which one worked.
At the end, ask your partner what they noticed. Their answer is better data than your own guess.
Red Flags That Mean Skip the Gadget
- You gasp or choke awake at night.
- You fall asleep at the wheel or in meetings.
- Your partner sees you stop breathing.
- Morning headaches or a dry mouth every day.
Any of these means a doctor visit comes first. A device is for the next step.

My Take
Pick the tool that matches the cause, then give it two honest weeks. If it fails, change the tool, not the diagnosis.
